25 Years-World Book Day Celebration

World Book Day celebrates 25 years today. This year’s theme is, “You are a reader”.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.

Today, across the country, children, their families and teachers are engaging with books, their plotlines, and their characters in very specific ways. GMS is entering into the spirit of the day by offering a reading of a short story called, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, which is an intriguing title.
Today, in the Drop Everything and Read session, all students are listening to this story via a PPT link. There is an additional intrigue, a series of masked readers are telling the story; by listening carefully the students not only hear and engage with the plotline and character but also see if they can identify who the reader is.
Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) has become a successful reading strategy in GMS, raising the profile of books and the importance of reading for everyone: reading is a life skill that brings pleasure and improved life chances. Happy reading everyone.
