The beginning of July marks the Sports Awards evening. This year, yet again, the evening was sold out leaving the PE department pondering as to how they can make it more accessible in future years.
The standard of the GMS students in sport is exceptionally pleasing and continues to go from strength to strength as we celebrated throughout the evening.
The evening saw 60 medals being awarded across 10 sports to students who have shown an outstanding contribution, player of the year performances as well as those that have improved significantly across the course of the year.
In addition, over 120 students received certificates from our guest on the evening round the world yachtswomen Tracey Edwards.
All nominees profiles can be seen below:
Rachel Goodwin
Rachel has had another outstanding year in sport. She has captained the Year 10 netball team to league success and contributed to the success of the Year 10 rounders and athletics teams in district competitions.
Rachel consistently receives praise and positive comments about her attitude and performances from other coaches regarding her amazing athleticism. However, it is in golf and hockey that Rachel has really excelled this year. Rachel was placed 1st in the Junior Championships at Harleyford Golf Club and achieved further success by finishing 2nd in the County Championships.
Rachel has combined this with playing regularly for Marlow Hockey Club 1st Team which has led to Regional Representation in the sport. She is without doubt a multitalented sports person.
Molly Harding
Molly (left) has represented Marlow Rowing Club for a number of years and when asking for an update of her achievements this year – she simply said “I won all the regattas I participated in this year” which were the most prestigious rowing events on the calendar. Molly is a J15 student however this year has always competed in a J16 boat, making her achievements even more impressive.
At the GB trials Molly came 1st in a double and 4th in a single. She has contributed to quad victories in the Junior Scullers Head, National Schools, Henley Women’s and at Ghent International Regattas. In a double she has won the J16 National Schools Regatta and J16 Ghent International meet. This is just an brief overview of her achievements – there are is more.
Her performances have helped her qualify for the GB V France team and I’m sure this is just the start international representative honours.
Alex Moss
Alex is currently a Year 9 student at Great Marlow School. Alex has been exceptionally successful in representing GMS in a range of sports. He has achieved district league success in football, basketball and athletics, county successes at rugby and football as well as national success in rowing.
Alex’s talent has enabled him to succeed in a number of activities, however his passion is rugby and his success so far has ensured that his future in the sport is promising.
Alex has captained the school team to league, county and inter county success for the past three years including success in the district 7’s tournament. Alex has further developed his talent through Marlow Rugby Club and due to his skill and fitness level has represented Bucks County with consistency and is in his 2nd year of the Wasps School of Rugby.
Alex has clearly demonstrated an exceptional talent and passion for Rugby that will hopefully see him forge a successful career in future years.
Cameron Almand
Cameron represents Wycombe Phoenix Harriers in Division 1 of the Chiltern League. He has had his best season to date with his club recording some fantastic achievements through determination and hard work.
In the Stowe race, Cameron finished 3rd, qualifying for English Schools, where he then finished 30th out of 500 athletes.
He also recorded a new PB finishing 39th out of 600 athletes at the Virgin Mini Marathon.
At the UK Cross Country Championships in Birmingham, televised on Sky, Cameron finished 7th out of 400 athletes and so far in the track season Cameron’s recorded time means he is currently the 2nd fastest Year 8 student in the country.
A formidable year for Cameron who is now also the youngest person selected in Bucks for English Schools Track & Field event in Birmingham.
