FOGMS Netball Tournament

Sunday 27th April saw the 5th FOGMS Mums’ Netball Tournament. The event -continues to grow from strength to strength with a record 12 teams entering this year!

A new Cup Competition was introduced to rank the teams after the group stages. This proved as much of a success as the Shield and Plate competitions. In contrast to the honours above, teams were contesting to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon made by GMS’s own Chris Liveartiski.

The day was of some concern to the organizers due to the weather that had been forecast all week. However, apart from a shower from 11:00 – 11:30 the day was dry and conditions were good. This did not stop four semi- serious injuries .a few twisted ankles, pulled muscles and then in a non contact game a clash of heads! Next year we will need our own St John Ambulance crew if the tournament continues to be as hotly contested as this one!

The group stage saw GMS edge a hotly contested group just in front of Borlase and Sandygate: the result rested on the significant goal difference. All the teams on the same number of points had lost a game each.

Holy Trinty, Bisham and Clayton completed the pool stage for Group A.  The hotly contested match between Borlase and GMS saw GMS win with a narrow 5 – 4 margin. It was a hotly anticipated game that many people expected to be repeated later as the final!

In Pool B newcomers Juniper Hill led the group followed by Dansfield to make up the teams playing for the Shield. The Plate was being contested by St Peters and Burford, also from Pool B, and the Competition Cup by The Meadows and Frieth !

In the semi finals Bisham defeated Frieth  andThe Meadows defeated Claytons, resulting in a Bisham verses Meadows Cup Final.

Burford were the victors against Sandygate, which led to them playing a match for the Plate, against St Peters, who had beaten Holy Trinity.

GMS beat Danesfield by four goals to secure a place in the final against Borlase who had beaten Juniper Hill in their second semi final!  A very close affair that went to extra time!

Wooden Spoon Winners – Claytons

Cup Winner – The Meadows who defeated Bisham 4-2

Plate Winners – Burford who defeated St Peters 12-9

3rd Place – Juniper Hill who defeated Danesfield 7-3

2nd Place – Great Marlow

1st Place – Sir William Borlase defeated GMS 5-2

A massive thank you to the Year 7 netball team; Steph Lyons and Amira Marah for their help in scoring and timekeeping; as well as Miss Towe who managed the score table all day.  It was great to see so many first time teams taking part and the feedback throughout was positive. Many of the participants were inspired to take part in the Back to Netball initiative, and so, without a doubt, will take part again next year on SUNDAY 26th APRIL 2015.
