On Thursday 27th March, GMS’s Year 12 sports students embarked on an exciting and insightful trip to Brentford Football Club, where they gained valuable knowledge and first-hand experience about careers within the world of sport. This trip provided students with the unique opportunity to learn about the wide variety of roles available in the sports industry, directly from industry professionals.
The day began with an engaging series of talks from a range of guest speakers, including ex-England football player Marcus Gayle. Marcus shared his personal experiences from his impressive career, offering students invaluable insights into the world of professional sport. Along with Marcus, other industry experts provided talks on various roles within the sector, covering areas like sports management, media, coaching, and sports science. These speakers emphasised the diverse and dynamic opportunities that exist in sports beyond the playing field, inspiring students to think broadly about their future careers.
In addition to the talks, there were numerous exhibitors at the event, offering students the chance to explore different career paths further. The exhibitors were more than happy to answer any questions and provide advice on how to get started in their respective fields, helping the students understand what it takes to break into the sports industry and what skills are most valued by employers.
One of the highlights of the trip was the exclusive tour of Brentford’s impressive stadium. Students were given the chance to explore areas usually reserved for the team and staff. They visited the press room, where they gained insight into how media and communications play a vital role in the club’s success. They also toured the changing rooms, providing a behind-the-scenes look at where players prepare for matchdays. Finally, they made their way out to the pitch, standing on the same field where professional players showcase their skills every week. The opportunity to walk on the hallowed turf was a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.
Overall, the trip to Brentford Football Club was an incredibly enriching experience for our Year 12 students. They left with a greater understanding of the numerous career paths available within the sports industry, as well as a newfound appreciation for the hard work and dedication that goes into running a professional football club. We would like to thank all the guest speakers, exhibitors, and Brentford Football Club for making this event such a success.
This trip has undoubtedly inspired many of our students to pursue careers in sport, and we look forward to supporting them as they take the next steps in their educational journey.
Many thanks to Gemma Muttitt for this article on a memorable and fascinating day.
