Brain Day: Psychology Trip

Published 27 June, 2025

Mrs King, Head of Psychology at GMS organised a trip to see Dr Sutton, who is an expert in neuroscience, an Honorary Lecturer at Nottingham Medical University and Director of Medical Biology Interactive.

With such prestigious accolades, attending the Brain Day was an exciting prospect, especially as it promised to bring the A-level Psychology curriculum to life by showing how the brain impacts upon behaviour including schizophrenia.

The day did not disappoint, there were fun-filled information-packed sessions, centred around our most enigmatic organ: the brain.

Students found it interesting to learn about the role of genetics and how environmental factors may increase someone’s predisposition towards mental disorders. There was a fascinating discussion relating to the latest advancements in brain imaging techniques, which is used to measure brain activity; Dr Sutton discussed the recent research into brain computer interfaces, and the potential uses these may have in the treatment of patients with neurological disorders, alongside a discussion of the legal and moral implications of such computer research. Research has helped scientists understand how the brain and behaviour interlink but students learnt to consider the issue within a  wider context.

The main part of the workshop included the dissection of a sheep’s brain. This was a very hands-on part of the day when students held, while attempting to identify, parts of the brain. Of course, this was an immersive experience, which consolidated the students’ prior knowledge of how the brain relates to different aspects of behaviour.

A highlight of the day was when students were tasked with creating models, from playdough, showing synaptic transmission.  There was a prize for the one considered best by the teachers overseeing the event.  Zara Khan from GMS won the prize! See the photograph below.

For students considering post-18 study of science, medicine or psychology at university this was an invaluable experience, which they are unlikely to forget.

GMS thanks Mrs King for facilitating this trip and the Royal Grammar School for hosting the event on 25th June.
