A full weekend of racing took place across the spectrum for GMS Boat Club.
On Saturday the top Boys’ Four went to the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, to trial for the England team in the upcoming Home International Regatta.
They knew they had their work cut out as their main opposition was half the Bedford School Eight, famous for beating Eton on the first day of Henley last week and a composite crew from Abingdon School and Kings College School, Wimbledon.
It was a tough hill to climb but the crew put in an aggressive time trial and looked a class act rating around 40 spm as they crossed the last 100 metres.
Unusually, this was not GMSBC’s year to be part of the England team but doubtless three of the four will be back next year to contend for international honours.
On Sunday, we held our first full Inter House Regatta in about seven years. This was an old favourite competition, which was banned by Longridge because too many people were having too much fun!
This regatta, based from our new site, saw students from every year group from Year 8 to 13 taking part. Rowers DO NOT stop just because they have taken their exams.
There were some great races and the banks were thronged by parents, carers, family and friends supporting, cheering for respective competitors in their Houses. It was a thoroughly exciting, lively and engaging event that created competition and gave enjoyment to many involved.
The scores were Kites 36, Hawks 42 and Eagles 12
Although Eagles did win the Senior Boys’ Singles and Senior Girls’ Singles.
