National Schools Chess Championships

Published 13 March, 2025

The Great Marlow chess team goes from strength to strength. For the first time, two Great Marlow chess teams took part in the regional rounds of the National Schools Chess Championships, organised by the English Chess Federation, with events in February and March.

In the first event, six students from Years 9, 10, and 11 took part in the British School Chess Challenge. Ten teams of students from schools across South-East England competed against each other for a place in the national finals. This was the team’s first time competing in a national tournament. The team did very well and won games against Wycombe Abbey, St Michael’s, and Holyport schools.

In March, six students from Years 7 and 8 took part in the Junior Chess Challenge. Great Marlow students competed against nine other teams. The team played four rounds of matches with paired teams based on the number of points scored in each round. There were many exciting games with high ranked players. Our team was able to win games against St Michael’s and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School.

For GMS students, it was a wonderful experience and the chess club hopes to build on these results in the years ahead; everyone is looking forward to the summer season of chess. GMS would like to commend everyone who took part and many thanks to Mark Campbell for hosting.
