Statistics Department Trip

Published 14 November, 2025

A fabulous trip to the London Stock Exchange, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England Museum was organised by Mrs Bansal for the statistics students of GMS.

In total, 34 students travelled to London to learn about the Bank of England’s history, its role in the economy and the museum, which charts changes over time.

Students were also treated with the opportunity to visit St Paul’s Cathedral and Smithfield Market. There was plenty of learning with a mix of history, RE and statistics. In addition, students learned about the diamond district, the significance of the Metropolitan line.

Initially, the group stopped off at the London Stock Exchange. Students in Year 11 are currently engaged in a Stocks Competition, where they have researched and invested in up to five companies, which are currently being tracked: the winner will be announced before the Christmas break. This visit to the Stock Exchange was directly linked to learning in lessons – they were taught about the origins of the Exchange and how it has changed over time. Importantly, they were given an update on the status of the shares they have invested in. The original stock exchange was also visited and comparisons made.

At the Bank of England museum students learned about the history and importance of the bank’s role. The GCSE course has a module on inflation and GDP, which were covered during the visit, meaning students appreciated the necessity of understanding this.

St Paul’s Cathedral had a small museum downstairs, which gave students an insight into its history and architecture, they were also lucky enough to see a small World War II exhibition situated behind the cathedral.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable day enhanced by a well rounded experience full of learning.
