Three Handball Events

Handball is an exciting, quick-paced team game of seven players that is  becoming more popular. Indeed, it has the potential to be the latest hot game in GMS, after three handball events have raised the profile of the sport in the school.

The Year 8s are to be congratulated for being THIRD in the Handball County Championship Finals at Mandeville. They were one of nine teams in a tournament that involved all teams playing each other, in a fast-paced exhausting competition: each game was just 10 minutes long. In every round, the GMS team displayed organisational skills to match their opponents, a superb team spirit, a determination, as well as a pleasant competitive manner, against teams who had more experience in local fixtures.

The Year 9, too, have to be commended on their performance, after stepping up to take the place of the Year 10s at Mandeville. Despite being a year younger, dominated physically and having less experience than their rivals, the Year 9s rose to the challenge and succeeded in drawing with Cressex and defeating Borlase.

The Year 9 team have been so buoyed up by the experience, they have already voiced their desire to be selected next year. Without doubt, they are well placed to win, because a year of honing their skills and facing peers of their own age, would more than tip the odds to their favour.

Closer to home, in the Redgrave Sports Centre, there was an excellent, mixed boys and girls inter-house tournament, organised by the BTEC Year 12 Public Services students. For their course they had to plan, organise and deliver a tournament, to submit as coursework. It is to their credit that they enthused 50 KS3 students in a game that generated a superb school spirit. It was competitive, while remaining sportsman-like and pleasant. The sports hall was teaming with people, as the team members were supported by at least 50 supporters.

The game of handball combines the techniques of netball and basketball to create unique and competitive game. Team members pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. As a result of the latest fixtures, the sport has a growing number of participants among GMS’s students.
