DfE’s Dux Awards Scheme

Recently, two Year 9 students, India Bonwick and Kirsten Barretto, accompanied Miss Tuddenham on a visit to Queen Mary, University of London, as part of the DfE’s Dux awards scheme.
All 24 Russell Group universities take part in the scheme, which recognises and rewards top performance and potential in students currently studying in maintained secondary schools. By doing so it raises aspirations. Schools select Year 9 students as their “Dux” (Latin for champion), who are rewarded with a visit to a Russell Group university.
Apart from raising aspirations, the aim of the visit was to promote opportunities available beyond school, in effect, bridging the gap between school and university. The girls enjoyed their day and gained a real insight into the exciting and rewarding opportunity that is university.
They learnt how the GCSE decisions they have recently made effects university options: they were encouraged to maintain a broad curriculum to create future opportunities. Current undergraduates explained entry options to enable the students to understand funding, scholarships and the role of summer schools.
India and Kirsten both enjoyed their time at Queen Mary’s, they particularly noted the East London alternative fashion style! They both hope to attend university in a few years time. Kirsten Barretto said: “The visit to Queen Mary’s University was very useful to help us find out what student life is really like”.
Dr Wendy Piatt, Director General of the Russell Group, said: We are delighted to be offering more bright prospective students the opportunity to come and meet our students and staff and have taster sessions this year. Wherever you’re from, with the right grades, attitude and potential, you have a good chance of getting into a Russell Group university.
