Eco Warriors are Rewarded

Our GMS Eco-Warriors, those who signed up to transform our school into a Green Flag Eco-School, enjoyed a trip to Wisley as a reward for their hard work and commitment.

So, on 26th September 46 students climbed aboard a coach bound for Wisley Horticultural Centre, and there they had a fabulous day.

Wisley is famous for its huge plant collections, which match other horticultural sites and it importantly showcases inspirational gardening.

GMS students spent a fascinating two hours in a gardening workshop learning about wormeries and how they fertilize the soil, without friendly worms our soil would not be aerated and plants would not grow.

The ‘kitchen garden’ part of the day helped students develop an understanding of how to grow home-produce to eat in a garden. Importantly, they came away understanding the huge nutritional and well-being benefits of growing vegetables for ourselves.

The tropical glass house was amazing. Divided into regions our students learnt about different climates and why different plants grow in different climates, also why certain plants cannot survive in our climate.

An inspired group of students returned to school full of new ideas and inspired to develop an allotment on the school grounds.

Wisley kindly given five apple trees to plant on our school grounds. We are looking forward to watching them mature and collecting a harvest of newly picked apples for our GMS children and staff sometime in the future.
