The Library

The new look library, refurbished just a year ago, is at the heart of GMS. It is open to all students at break times and after school.  Homework Club is staffed in there four days a week, Monday to Thursday: 3 pm to 4.30 pm.
For our Year 7s and Year 8s, the once-a-fortnight library-lesson enables librarians and staff to promote a love of reading. To introduce students to a variety of genres, the English Department has collated a new library lesson booklet, which promotes the different genres found on the library shelves.  From the wide book options available, our Year 7s and Year 8s are expected to read two books a month.

Some students and staff enjoy audio books. There is a great deal of joy to be gained by listening to a story that is read by an expert. Some enjoy listening while following in a printed copy, too.

Graphic novels and comics are sometimes dismissed, but there is much to be gained from these two types of genre: GMS believes in reading for pleasure: whatever brings joy and a sense of satisfaction is worth reading, because stories help us make sense of the world we live in.

The drive on promoting reading across the school, from Year 7 to Year 11, is embedded in the books read in class and in form time.  The school invested a considerable amount of money to set up this initiative, and careful planning went into the books purchased. The final list, we believe, provides something for everyone.

As ever, the importance of reading at home is paramount and we are grateful for the many ways the reading adventure, promoted in the library, is supported by parents, carers and the wider family network.
