Wood4trees: Update

GMS embraced the Wood4trees project, led by Neil Butler a couple of years ago and it has been ongoing ever since. Our students have been caring for their trees while a suitable home can be found in which to plant them. The project was inspired by David Attenborough’s concerns over climate change and was launched in 2021. Neil aims, with our help, to plant a million trees to help fight climate change! Working with Neil at Wood4trees, means GMS’s students are helping to fight back against global warming and secure a better future for everyone.
During 21/22 students planted their very own sapling / small tree. Since then Neil has been searching for a place to create our very own local wood. Now, this has come to fruition.

Message from the project leader Neil Butler:
“Firstly, thank you so much for being involved with Wood4trees. This year we’ve all seen the impact of climate change with so many dramatic weather events all over our planet, each of us can make a small difference but together we can have a much bigger impact so please keep going!
It’s been an exciting year as we planted our first poplar trees at farmland on the Harleyford Estate and finally we have managed to find a home for all our 750 trees at Woolley Firs. The planting will be carried out in February 2024 on land that is being re-wilded by the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trusts. It’s a great location as it is so close, just along the A4 to the west of Maidenhead, and is part of an educational facility that is being created.
I hope your tree has survived in its pot but if not don’t worry as we can provide you another tree with a small donation of £6 to Wood4trees. If your tree has survived, then please remove any weeds from the pot and top it up with a little more soil and give it a good watering as we have some warmer weather moving into October.
If you’ve a photo of your tree, then please share it with your teachers and I look forward to meeting you all again next year when we can finally plant our trees in their new home!”
