World Book Day 2014

Annually, World book Day is celebrated on the first Thursday in March. This year over a hundred countries took part. The aim of World Book Day is to encourage as many adults and children to talk about books, authors and illustrators. Discussions generally focus on books that are loved, are memorable, or have made a difference to lives.

This year, to celebrate World Book Day, the English Department ran a school wide competition in which forms were asked to create a display about books that have been important to the pupils. The concept that pupils and staff had to think about was ‘ Writes of Passage’, essentially books that have changed or significantly affected them in some way: taught them about love, life, or made them laugh or cry. Some excellent authors were nominated from Noel Coward to Terry Pratchett.  Interestingly, the book that was overwhelmingly recommended was ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ by John Green.
The English Department would like to thank everyone who took part, especially those who created the lovely winning displays. This statement by Charles W Eliot is memorable because it is so true: “Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.”

Reading is central to success, which is why GMS champion World Book Day and have enrolled the school in the Accelerated Reading Scheme. There are so many wonderful books published, sharing them is best way for us all to find the very best books to read.
