Make Reading Part of Your Summer

Published 15 July, 2026

As the summer holidays begin, GMS would like to encourage every student to make time for reading. Whether it’s a gripping adventure, a fascinating biography, a graphic novel or a favourite classic, because reading for pleasure is one of the best ways to keep young minds active over the break.

Reading has many benefits beyond improving literacy. Just 20 minutes of reading each day can help to reduce stress, improve concentration, boost memory and develop empathy.

Moreover, regular reading helps academically: it expands vocabulary; improves writing skills; also it maintains the progress students have made throughout the school year, making the return to school in September much smoother.

This summer is also the perfect time to support the UK’s National Year of Reading 2026.

The campaign, led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust, encourages children, families and communities to rediscover the joy of reading for pleasure.

The initiative’s theme is, “Go All In” and it celebrates reading in all its forms. It aims to inspire lifelong reading habits that benefit wellbeing, learning and future success. To find out more and discover ideas for becoming involved go to the National Year of Reading website: https://goallin.org.uk/

Marlow Library’s Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to discover new books, earn rewards and enjoy reading with friends throughout the holidays. The challenge is free to join and is suitable for readers age 6-12 years, so ideal for our new Year 7s. Older students may even enjoy helping younger siblings complete this https://www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/campaign/summer-reading-challenge/

Finally, if you’re looking for inspiration, here are some recommended reads from our local independent bookshop, Marlow Bookshop. Whether you’re an avid reader or just looking for your next great story, there’s something for everyone!
