The planning for this year’s Summer Genre Challenge is underway and GMS hopes many students will join in.
This challenge is open to all students in Year 7 & 8, who want to participate.
The challenge involves reading nine books from different genres.
The prize is a £10 book token and certificate in an end of term assembly.
Why is it good to read different genres ?
- Improves reading comprehension
- Betters writing skills
- Generates greater empathy and emotional intelligence & offers a broader view of the world.
- Improves concentration and stamina.
- Leads to stronger memory and inference skills.
- Develops creative thinking.
- Supports subjects beyond English
There is a direct collaboration between reading and being able to analyse unseen texts, compare genres and write in multiple styles across the curriculum subjects. Certainly, early exposure makes this transition smoother.
From past experience, taking on this challenge helps students discover what they enjoy.
Trying multiple genres prevents reading from feeling like a chore and increases the chance of finding something that truly engages.
Confidence grows when students realise they can engage with different genres, also the interaction with a wide range of vocabulary increases knowledge and understanding.
Good luck all Year 7s and Year 8s with completing this exciting challenge.
