On Sunday 30th November, Great Marlow took crews to this top-class race.
Wallingford have not been able to host this race for a couple of years due to high river conditions, so the students and coaches were delighted to return to this fantastic race course.
The entry line-up read a bit like the who’s who of British rowing, particularly in the junior section. Oxford Brookes and Oxford University were both out in force, as it is their home stretch. The junior crews came from St Pauls, Eton, Radley, Shiplake, St Edwards and Headington amongst others.
Virtually all our crews had at least half the boat filled with students rowing-up at least one year group, therefore, having some young crews we hoped for good relative positions rather than outright wins, which indeed was the outcome.
In the ‘Morning Division’ we raced a J18 (Year 13) Boys’ Eight and a WJ16 (Year 11) Girls’ Eight. Both crews brought credit to themselves, it was the WJ16 crew who came out strongest earning 6th Position.
In the afternoon, the WJ18 Eight, J16 Boys Eight and the J18 Four raced. All had good rows with the two boy’s crews coming 10th and 9th in their events.
Congratulations to all rowers, their coaches, parents and carers, who all play a significant part in all our rowers’ successes.
It was exciting for GMS students and their coaches to see so many GMS ex-students performing for their clubs: Ruth Rackstraw, Anna Bradley, Erin Huddleston, Charlotte Greening, Noah Grottrup to name a few. However, top prize, literally, went to Sal Dunn who was rowing at 2 in the Oxford Brookes First Eight, which won the Head overall.
