World Book Day 2026

Published 9 February, 2026

GMS invites all our Year 7 cohort to celebrate World Book Day by dressing as a character from their favourite book on Thursday 5th March.

There will be photo opportunities and House prizes to be won on the day. Please note this is optional and, although encouraged, there is no obligation to dress up. Students who do not wish to do so can just wear their usual school uniform.

This year’s World Book Day theme is, ‘You are a Reader’ is all about encouraging young people to see reading as something enjoyable, social and part of everyday life.

In 2026, World Book Day aligns with the National Year of Reading, which is a UK wide campaign encouraging children and families to build reading habits that last beyond the classroom.

If buying a new costume is a challenge, here are some excellent, but cheap, last-minute ideas:

  • The Midnight Gang – pyjamas
  • Percy Jackson – ordinary clothes, zipped hoodie, t-shirt and jeans, shield or lightning bolt made from cardboard
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – ordinary clothes, polo shirt, jumper, black school trousers, homemade golden ticket and a chocolate bar
  • Baby-sitters Club / Lottie Brooks / Summer I Turned Pretty – ordinary clothes ie jeans / tops, summer dresses

Local charity shops and re-selling sites can also be a great source of inspiration for a lower cost.

Please note we do not allow football kits to be worn on World Book Day.

Every student receives a World Book Day £1 voucher during their library lesson, which can be exchanged for a book of their choice.

GMS Literary Festival takes place in the same week as World Book Day from 2nd – 6th March.
