The Great Marlow Chess Club is a growing club in the school’s extra curricular timetable.
Just recently, chess enthusiasts took part in a simultaneous exhibition match with Grandmaster Matthew Wadsworth; he challenged 15 of our students and 15 students from Sir William Borlase.
Mr. Wadsworth became a Grandmaster in Bad Wörishofen, Germany earlier this year: his score took him into the elite 2500 points threshold and secured him the title of Grandmaster.
It is very rare that any school student would be able to play a grandmaster, and we are very grateful to Mr. Wadsworth for giving of his time and the chance for our students to play against him. Everyone involved took the opportunity very seriously; they studied Mr. Wadsworth’s previous games for weeks before the event.
GMS participants thoroughly enjoyed the event and were very pleased to have been invited to share in the experience with students from Borlase, certainly, it’s become a lasting memory for everyone involved.

Chess Club has been growing every year, and we are very excited to welcome more students from all year groups and ability levels to take part next term.
