Our department’s focus is to give students a life-long interest in the subject that goes beyond their studies.

History is rich with details and yet, because those details can be interpreted differently, the subject offers more than one conclusion or outcome. We investigate the work of historians and how interpretations of bodies of knowledge and sources are formed. We challenge students to question; to use and assess evidence; and to reach conclusions based on evidence and they are encouraged to be confident when expressing their opinion.

Across the key stages we aim to:

  • Deepen understanding of historical periods.
  • Develop confident, literate and skilled historians.
  • Deliver a broad, balanced and aspirational curriculum.
  • Remove potential barriers to learning.
  • Deliver high quality and engaging lessons.
  • Enhance student’s communication and independent research skills.
  • Further ignite their interest in history as a subject.
  • Ensure that there is a vibrant learning environment where there is an atmosphere of academic integrity, respect and civility.

History is a popular subject at GCSE and A-level with around half the cohort opting for the subject at Key Stage 4. The department is staffed by subject specialists with varied backgrounds in history, archeology and industry.
