Last Thursday 28th November, GMS’s English Department took over 80 Year 11 students to see a fantastic production of An Inspector Calls at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. This is one of the GCSE set texts that they are studying for English Literature and was an excellent chance to see the iconic award-winning production of the 1945 play.
The students had some interesting insights following the performance and there were some animated debates on best performances by actors and best bits from the play. For anyone familiar with the play, you may be aware of the Inspector’s cutting line to Mr Birling when he states ‘I don’t play golf’. The dry delivery of this line elicited an impromptu applause from the audience and was a great example of how engaging the performance was.
As ever, our students conducted themselves exceptionally well and impressed the teachers present with their maturity and engagement with the play. For some, this was the first time that they’d seen a ‘proper’ play performed in a reputed theatre and I hope that they really enjoyed the experience!
Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you to the members of staff that accompanied the students on the trip: Mr Taylor, Mrs Sadd, Mrs Legerton, Mrs Houston, Mrs Burge and Mrs Ben Haj Ali.
Thank you to Mr Taylor for sending the information and thank you to all the staff who accompanied the students on this theatre trip.
