Rowing in Bath

Published 18 November, 2024

On Saturday 16th November 2024 Great Marlow Boat Club went to Bath to take part in the Avon Autumn Head.

Year 9 competed in their first race of the season; earlier races were cancelled due to river conditions.

The Year 9 Girls’ Quads were the first to race. There were two reasonably even crews from this very strong squad and everyone was hoping for a successful first race. Sadly, an equipment failure in one boat and confusing umpiring for the second meant that neither crew fulfilled their potential. Never-the-less, it was a good learning experience and there is no doubt we will see exciting things from these girls in the near future.

Next was the Year 10 boys in the long division who a reasonable field of nine crews. The boys performed well coming 1st and 3rd in their event, with Winchester College ( the oldest school in England) squeezing in between our two crews. A very strong result from the two crews.

We took one Year 9 Boys’ Quad who won their event comfortably and were only 7 seconds off the winning Winchester Octo time, which was exciting.

Our Year 10 girls were the last to race in the long division and seemed to taking a rather restrained pace, rating around 25 strokes a minute. Despite this low rate, their power and efficiency obviously had good effect as they also won their event. The second Quad came in third, to match the boys’ achievements.

A successful day in Bath.

GMSBC are very proud of all the athletes competing this weekend
