How to use the Learning Ladders

Heads of Department have provided information for a Learning Ladder, which gives a brief overview of what is taught for the duration of their course. The Learning Ladder is directly linked to a more in-depth Learning Journey, which provides detailed information about every topic taught in an academic year, assessments and extension materials.

The way to access all of this vital information is easy. Choose a subject area, open the page, scroll down and click on the relevant Learning Ladder. Once the Learning Ladder is open, click on a year roundel that opens the Learning Journey.

GMS offers a Diverse and Comprehensive Curriculum

Great Marlow School aims to provide students with the skills and confidence to reach their full potential, through offering opportunities to excel.

The staff at GMS have carefully considered what students, parents and carers require in regards to understanding the progression of teaching and learning in our school. Successes, in the Sixth Form, at A-level, T-level or BTEC are based on the foundations laid in KS3 and KS4.

Departments have committed to delivering a comprehensively diverse curriculum. In KS3, the core subjects English, Maths and Science are accompanied by Art, Computing, Drama, Citizenship, Geography, History, Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish), Music, Physical Education, Relationships and Social Health Education (RSHE) and Religious Education.

In Year 9, students choose their GCSE subjects. The core curriculum, English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science (Double Science or Triple Science GCSE) is accompanied by four optional GCSE subjects. In addition, two compulsory non-examination subjects are taught, Physical Education (PE), and Relationship, Social and Health Education (RSHE).

Our Sixth Form Curriculum is extensive and exciting. All GCSE subjects can be chosen as A-levels. New subjects such as Ancient History, Law, Politics and Psychology are popular. In addition, BTECs in Creative Digital Media, National Extended Certificate (Level 3) in Sport, Travel and Tourism and Uniformed Protective Services are often chosen as they have a greater coursework element than the examination based A-levels. Finally, the very popular full-time T-level Technical Qualification in Childcare and Education is available, which is a great route into nursing, teaching, or being a professional nanny.
