Ancient History

Studying Ancient History opens an exciting exploration of ancient Greece and Rome. “Ancient History has had far more, not less, impact on our modern lives than recent history has.” David Miano

Department Vision:
To showcase how Ancient History is influential, not least because it fostered a free speaking democracy, gave us the roots of the language we speak, and shows us that our political, philosophical and scientific ideas are based upon ancient Greek and Roman learning.
Department Aim:
To develop an understanding and appreciation of discrete periods of Ancient Greek and Roman history.

Ancient History is a high-status classical qualification that will help make a job or college application unique. Ancient History is ideal for students who studied History at GCSE and now want to study an additional or completely different period, and also for students who dropped History at GCSE and want to return to the subject.

Students do not need to have taken GCSE History to study this subject but must obtain a GCSE Grade 6 or higher in History or English to be eligible for enrolment in this course. GCSE History candidates often choose to study this as an alternative to A-level History and each year, several take both courses. This is allowed as History is classified as a ‘Humanity’ subject whereas Ancient History is a ‘Classic’.

There are two examinations, no coursework in Ancient History. (However, students who opt for A-level History, which does have a coursework component, have the option of choosing an Ancient History topic if they are taking both A-Level subjects.)

Typically, year on year, students achieve top A-level grades. Teaching by specialist teachers, equipped with wide ranging resources ensures a deep knowledge and understanding of the modules.
