Examination Board: AQA (GCSE 1111)
The Citizenship Department has the school’s values at the heart of its curriculum. Students gain the knowledge, skills and understanding to help them thrive as individuals, who can play a full and active part in society as responsible, global citizens.
The curriculum we teach is encourages understanding of issues through active participation in discussions, debates and independent study. Understanding democracy and how it serves the people in the UK is achieved by a study of government processes and the ways laws are made.
Encouragement to take an active interest in local, national and global events widens the horizons of our students and leads to a better understanding of our society and its politics, which is based upon the principles of equality, fairness and justice.
Both in KS3 and KS4 the curriculum creates inclusivity and equal opportunities. Our intention is to inspire and address curiosity about human society, how it is structured and what the benefits are of living in a diverse, inclusive and democratic society.
Citizenship challenges students to develop:
- knowledge and understanding of the following topics: the law and the rules governing it; the democratic process; the media; human rights; diversity; money and the economy; sustainable development; and the world as a global community
- knowledge and understanding of the concepts: of democracy, justice, equality, freedom, authority and the rule of law
- skill and aptitude in critical thinking including being able to: analyse information; express opinions; take part in discussions and debates; negotiate; engage with conflict resolution; and participate in community action
- values and dispositions including respect for justice; democracy and the rule of law; openness, tolerance and courage to defend a point of view; and a willingness to listen to, work with, and stand up for others
