Examination Boards: Pearson Edexcel 1Ma1/GCSE Mathematics / Pearson Edexcel 9MAO/GCE A-level
Our first principal is that mathematics is an inclusive subject. By fostering a positive mindset where ‘everyone is a mathematician’ we create equal opportunity for all our students irrespective of previous experience, prior learning and special educational need. On their journey through the maths curriculum, GMS students will become numerate, skilful and knowledgeable mathematicians which in turn will empower them to realise their potential and prepare them for their future career needs.
The maths curriculum aims to develop students’ mathematical confidence allowing them to become resilient learners who can solve a range of complex problems and can critically analyse the world around them. We achieve this by delivering a creative and ambitious curriculum that is rich in skills yet also filled with opportunities to ignite curiosity. Furthermore, as students begin to reflect on their deepening understanding and the interconnected nature of the subject, they begin to view mathematics as beautiful, surprising, enjoyable and interesting; developing a real sense of place within the infinite nature of the subject.
As students progress through the school, there is an explicit shift of responsibility for the learning process from the teacher to the student. This supported process of actively encouraging students to take on ownership of their learning of mathematics enables them to gain skills and attitudes that will benefit their lifelong learning journey.
The mathematics curriculum coupled with aspirational expectations for all, allows for progression through both effort and excellence, both of which are actively celebrated.
How this is exemplified within the maths department at GMS:
- Students are set challenging targets
- We have high expectations for all students
- A variety of approaches to teaching and learning are offered in order to engage and motivate all students and demand their active participation
- Mathematical literacy is developed through the correct use of mathematical vocabulary, class discussions and structured reasoning
- Students are encouraged to develop their conceptual, procedural and factual fluency
- We aim to nurture resilient, independent learners who are able to use what they know to work out what they don’t know
- The transition for students between key stages (including from KS2 to KS3) is smooth, ensuring progression in teaching and learning throughout their time at Great Marlow School
- Learning is consolidated through personalised home study programmes which is supported by individual student feedback in lessons.
- We maintain strong links with local leaders in maths education including Primary Maths Leads, Astra SCITT & BBO Maths Hub in order to keep up to date with best practice and the latest developments in the world of maths education
- We explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance students’ enjoyment of mathematics
