Great Marlow Physical Education Department operates as a fully inclusive facilitator of sport and physical activity.

Our Department’s Focus is on the development of life-skills in every lesson. There is a particular significance placed upon the MyPB 6Rs and leadership. This core strand of leadership culminates in the completion of a PE Life Skills Award, which all Year 11 students take part in. In addition to this award, students in KS5 can opt to take the Level 3 Sports Leaders Course which is also facilitated by our department.

The site boasts outstanding facilities including 3x football pitches, 1 x rugby pitch, all weather pitch, 6x tennis courts, 6x netball courts, 2x outdoor basketball courts, dance studio, fitness studio, large sports hall and 2 PE classrooms. The PE Department consists of 8 full time teachers and a sports technician.

All students from years 7 – 11 will have 4 lessons of core PE across our 2-week timetable. All schemes of work and lessons are specifically planned to meet the needs of the diverse population of students we have at GMS. the Level 3 Sports Leaders Course which is also facilitated by the PE Department.

Throughout the 5 mandatory years of education, students will all receive lessons in a broad and balanced range of activities. These will include invasion games, divided court net games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor adventurous activities, striking and fielding sports and athletics. As a department we endeavour to continually reflect on our provision and practice to ensure that we are continually adapting to meet the requirements of the ever-changing landscape we experience in education.

Across all key stages we ensure the following:

  • high levels of engagement and enjoyment
  • significant levels of activity
  • a range of tasks specifically planned to maximise progress for all students

Whilst practical skills, strategies and tactics do underpin many of the sports we teach, there is always a focus on the development of knowledge beyond the practical to ensure the students receive a comprehensive Physical Education.

Further to these curriculum opportunities, our extra-curricular provision is significant. Monday through to Friday, GMS students can attend after school clubs and practices. The programme operates throughout the entire school year. It is a direct reflection of our curriculum intent and is fully inclusive, with opportunity at its core. Whilst remaining fully inclusive, the school typically competes with prolific success at district, county, regional and even national levels.

In addition to the core PE at GMS and the leadership qualifications offered, the department deliver GCSE PE (OCR) at KS4 and BTEC Sport, Travel & Tourism, Uniformed Protective Services (Pearson Edexcel) as well as A-level PE (OCR) at KS5.

The Physical Education Extra-Curricular Programme

Each week, due to the dynamic nature of our extensive fixtures programme, and school related engagements for staff, we produce a Sports Bulletin. This details the information for all of the sport and PE related activity for the following week, including where clubs/practices/fixtures take place, the timings, the teacher responsible and which student group the activity is for. The sports bulletin is displayed in form rooms, outside the PE department, on the school website and on the PE Instagram account (gms_PE).
