Examination Boards: Pearson Edexcel (GCSE Statistics 1STO / GCE A-level 9STO)
Our first principal is that statistics is an inclusive subject. By fostering a positive mindset where ‘everyone is a statistician’ we create equal opportunity for all our students irrespective of previous experience, prior learning and special educational need. On their journey through the statistics curriculum, GMS students will become numerate, skilful and knowledgeable statisticians which in turn will empower them to realise their potential and prepare them for their future career needs.
GCSE Statistics initially builds on many of the skills studied in Key Stage 3 and GCSE Maths, but takes these mathematical ideas much further and seeks to develop an understanding of their use. Many new skills and statistical methods are introduced and applied to real world situations, including the communication of statistical findings.
Statistics is about making decisions when there is uncertainty, using statistics to understand data, and communicating the findings. Perhaps one of the most versatile areas of maths, it gives students the skills to collect, analyse, interpret, and present data using the statistical enquiry cycle.
As students progress through the course, there is an explicit shift of responsibility for the learning process from the teacher to the student. This supported process of actively encouraging students to take on ownership of their understanding of statistics enables them to gain skills and attitudes that will benefit their lifelong learning journey.
The statistics curriculum, coupled with aspirational expectations for all, allows for progression through both effort and excellence, both of which are actively celebrated.
How this is exemplified within the Statistics Department at GMS:
- Students are set challenging targets
- We have high expectations for all students
- A variety of approaches to teaching and learning are offered in order to engage and motivate all students and demand their active participation
- Statistical literacy is developed through the correct use of subject specific vocabulary, class discussions and drawing conclusions from the statistical enquiry cycle.
- Students are encouraged to develop their conceptual, procedural and factual fluency
- We aim to nurture resilient, independent learners who are able to use what they know to work out what they don’t know
- Learning is consolidated through personalised home study programmes which is supported by individual student feedback in lessons.
- We maintain strong links with the Royal Statistical Society
- We explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance students’ enjoyment of mathematics
- The skills acquired when studying statistics are highly transferable to further subjects at all levels.
